Nearly 90 percent of Myanmar's citizens are Buddhists, and soon after independence from British rule in 1947, the Burmese government declared Buddhism the country's official religion.

U Thant (1909-1974) was the third Secretary-General of the United Nations, serving in that capacity from 1961-1971.
